Well, I got a sad tale, I think’ll make you cry
About a frustrated boy, with a tear in his eye
With a look on his face when you see him pass by
You say “Awwwww…!”
You see now he’s got a problem
And there ain’t no cure
And it’s bringing him down and he can’t endure
With his chin on his chest
He’s a genuine, pure poor baby.
A lot of things in this world that he’d really enjoy
But he won’t get a chance,
‘Cause he’s under employ
He’s under the thumb, he’s a committed boy
And that’s tough.
Well, I’m sure at some time
You’ve all been in his shoes
When you’re really stuck
And you can’t even choose
He’s got the “wish that I could be there
But I can’t ‘cause I’ve got to be here” blues.
Well all the nice folks must think he’s a jerk
But he hasn’t gone fishing, he’s really at work
He’s just got duties that he shouldn’t shirk
It’s a shame.
So let me give some advice
That I hope you can use
That’ll ease your mind
And take some wear off your shoes
Don’t get caught up in the
“Wish that I could be there but I can’t
‘Cause I’ve got to be here” blues.
Well, I wish I was schizophrenic
Then I wouldn’t have to choose
I could be two places at one time
And I wouldn’t have to lose
My mind to those lowdown, depressing
“Wish that I could be there but I can’t
‘Cause I’ve got to be here” blues.
