I grew up in the church, a house made for God
I prayed and felt nothing, thought it was my fault
I waited for answers, but did not hear a sound
I was afraid God didn’t want to be found.
When I was fourteen, I strayed from the fold
God lost in the Badlands, day and night in the cold
A medicine woman came to me in a dream
I swear I was awake when she said to me:
The land is a prayer, and church is the sky
And open cathedral, a natural choir
The wind in my face, the twilight at dusk
The earth is the house God made for us.
I jumped to my feet
I gave thanks to the sky
And thanks to the ground where I slept
To the tears in my eyes
In one holy moment I saw everything new
And said: “There you are, God
I’ve been looking for you.”
Back in the city my troubled mind is calm
God must have been here in my heart all along
And in colors of nature from heaven’s own brush
In the house made for us.
