In the beginning God created heaven and earth
But light was hid in darkness deep, awaiting birth
And the Spirit of God, over seas dark and dead
With a sweep of his thundering mighty hand, God said:

“Let there be light!” and there was light
God called the sunlight day and called the darkness night
And there was eve, and there was morn
A very first day set forth
And a world was born into the light.

In the midst of all our darkness
In the presence of despair
In a moment of confusion
This will be our prayer:

Let there be light! Let there be peace.
Let there be morning sun, let there be days like these
Let there be truth, bless every land
Grant us your wisdom, now
Help us to understand
Let there be light.

Let our light shine forth to others
That it might be a gift to share
Love’s soft caress in every action
This will be our prayer.
