About Me
Doreen’s first professional experience behind a microphone was not as a singer, but as an on-air television reporter for ABC affiliates in Youngstown, Ohio and West Palm Beach, Florida. After spending four years in TV, she switched careers to public relations, where she has worked with both corporations and nonprofit organizations. Today, she owns and operates The PR Czar® Inc., a full service public relations agency in Stuart, Florida. She also is a professional photographer and freelance writer. All the while, she has been writing songs and playing music.
Doreen was exposed to music as a child. Both her parents played instruments and she began playing clarinet at age 9. She wanted to play the drums but her band teacher wouldn’t allow her because he said “drums are for boys!” She went on to take private piano lessons for a short period of time, played in the concert and marching bands, joined the high school chorus, and finally took a guitar lesson during her senior year of college at Slippery Rock University. That inspired her to begin writing very personal songs based on her life’s experiences. Most recently, she took classical guitar lessons.
Those who know Doreen knows she is not shy, except when it came to sharing her music, which she limited to her own home. It took the sudden, unexpected death of a friend to give her the courage to perform publicly in 2008, even though she had been writing songs and playing guitar for 28 years! Her friend’s afterlife inspiration led to her writing a song about him, which she performed at his funeral. Shortly afterwards, she and Mike Jordan discovered their voices blended well, and they decided to form their Connected Souls duo.
One of her performance highlights is while attending a Neale Donald Walsch (author of Conversations With God and many other books) retreat, Neale invited her to perform one of her original songs. She chose Time To Play, and indeed, for Doreen, it is finally Time To Play!
Says Doreen, “Mike also was instrumental (pun intended) in helping me break out of my musical shell. He was used to being on stage with his theatrical experience and playing music with him gave me a comfort level. This experience goes beyond any musical dream I’ve had, and I am grateful for every person who has positively influenced me along the way.”
P.S. Her band teacher may have stopped her from playing the drums as a child, but as a grown-up, she enjoys playing the bongos, congas and other hand drums and just this year she was given the opportunity to play “a real drum set” for the first time with her church band!
